From the Desk of the Principal—
Happy New Year to all of you!
Each
year by this time we have had our finals for the National Geography Bee. This
contest has been an annual event open to all 4th and 5th
graders. The National Geographic Society and Sylvan Learning Centers sponsor
this bee as an effort to restore geography to every classroom in the country.
Our 4th & 5th graders have enjoyed this challenge in
the past and we have all been very impressed with the knowledge they have
shared during this event. I am pleased
to announce our finalists: Bryan
Kerman, Connor Ryan, Emma Campbell, Adam Marx, Sarah MacAskill, Zachary
Martineau, Sydney Banks, runner up, Bob Dortona and winner of the year Ben
DelVecchio!

This
month students will have the opportunity to view a laser beam show entitled “Laser
Beam Character Education Spectacular presented by Prismatic Magic.” This program has also provided worksheets
and activities for teachers to use with students in conjunction with the
assembly. In this packet there is a
laser beam sign language descriptive review, teamwork activities, as well as
suggestions on how to integrate Math, Science, Art and Music curriculum into
other activities provided. This cultural
event sounds “Spectacular”. So
once again, a Big Thank You goes to our PTA for sponsoring this event.

Our
Reading Incentive Program will be off and running soon. We will kick-it-off on January 23rd
and it will run until April 2nd.
This year’s theme is “ELECT TO READ
- VOTE FOR BOOKS”. Similar to
last year’s program, our students are encouraged to read at home over these two
months to help them become better readers.
Weekly Trivia questions will also be devoted to this program. Mrs. Johnson and her committee have worked
extremely hard at organizing this event in hopes of instilling reading as a
pleasure for our students.

Please remind your child to
check the “Lost and Found” as we have many articles turned in to us on a daily
basis. If you would like to check it
out when you are here, please feel free to do so. The Lost and Found is located in the cafeteria.
Winter
is here and students do go out on most days, so please be sure your child is
dressed for the weather - hats, mittens, boots and snow suits. We also have many
students who are in need of these items so if you would like to donate anything
your child has outgrown, we certainly could use them.
See
you all at PTA on January 9th at Salem High School at 6:30pm!
