The Mary Fisk School continues to work together to promote academic excellence and make decisions that are in the best interest of all of its students.  Over the past few years we have taken time to establish guidelines to raise student expectations.  We most recently adopted a Student Expectation Handbook that was shared with students and parents at the beginning of the 2007 – 2008 school year.  The entire Fisk School Community was involved in this undertaking.  We took great pride in this initiative knowing we have standardized student expectations.

Our Grade 5 students proudly work with our Grade 1 students on a monthly basis.  The teachers collaboratively plan activities that are academically based and/or focused on different holidays throughout the year.  It is also not unusual to see a 5th Grader reading to a younger student or a younger student reading to their buddy regularly.  Our 5th Graders are very proud of their “little buddies” and are excellent role models for them.  These relationships allow these young learners to become more comfortable with the school setting, and give an opportunity for them to connect with a responsible student that can help them out anywhere or anytime during the school day.

Our volunteer program continues to thrive along with our active P.T.A.  Once again this year we have been the recipient of the New Hampshire Partners in Education Blue Ribbon Award in recognition of our volunteers’ accomplishments.  Last year for the first time we had high school student volunteers come to work with students in grades three thru five.  These volunteers supported and reinforced math skills on a weekly basis.  Through games, drills and one-on-one assistance, these young tutors helped them build confidence in acquiring better skills in the area of Math.

In closing the Fisk School Community would like to acknowledge that at the close of the school year, Carolyn Maartmann-Moe will be retiring after 39 years of teaching in the Salem School District.  Mrs. Maartmann-Moe has had a great impact on hundreds of students throughout her career.  We thank her for her dedicated service.  She will certainly be missed.
