Haigh School

Principal,  Ms. Gail C. Rowe         phone: 893-7064  fax: 893-7065            May, 2008

From the Desk of the Principal:

It is spring!  The calendar is very full this month, with field trips and many school activities. Please refer to it.

At the end of this school year, Haigh will be saying goodbye to four longtime teachers.  We wish to recognize the retirements of Janice Epps (37 years), Alice Lacharite (29 years), Jean Ciarametaro (19 years), and Nancy Giuffrida (10 years).  After decades of dedicated service to the children and families of the Salem School District, we want to say thank you.  We will miss them.

We also want to welcome some new additions to our staff for next year.  Our current Reading Specialist Tara Tetu will be teaching 4th grade at Haigh next year, our new Reading Specialist will be Nancy Santapaolo, and our new Art teacher will be Kellen Rattigan.  We are hiring a third 4th grade teacher for 2008-2009, and we will also be hiring a new 1st grade teacher, as Mrs. Meisser is moving to 2nd grade in the fall.  Welcome everyone.

NECAP TESTING in MAY

Grade 4 students will be taking the NECAP Science test on May 19th, 20th, and 21st.  This is the first official administration of the test, and parents will receive test scores at a later date.  Please make sure your 4th grade students are well rested and have eaten breakfast on testing days. Food service will also provide a free breakfast snack for Grade 4 students on those three testing days.

NO SCHOOL FOR 1st GRADERS MAY 22 & 23

Because of the two-day observation schedule for next year’s incoming 1st graders, there will be NO SCHOOL for all current 1st graders on Thursday, May 22 and Friday May 23.    Please make sure you make other arrangements for your 1st grade children those two days.

HAIGH YARD SALE

The annual Haigh School Yard Sale was held on Saturday, May 10th.  The yard sale raises funds for cultural events, horticulture club, field trips and other school activities.  There were over 19 tables, the students’ reading incentive table, and the school concession stand.  Basket raffle tickets for beautiful baskets valued up to $200.00 were also sold.  These baskets will be raffled off at the annual school wide Ice Cream Social on May 22nd.

We would like to thank the families and children who orchestrated the event and put in the time, energy, and pride into helping at this school function:   Joseph, Lois, and Nate Schena, Tessa and Judy Shanteler, Robbie and Laura dos Santos, Kristin Kloza, Liz Sheedy, Pinkie Grams and Susan Keith. A special thanks goes to our sponsors, The Salem Community Patriot newspaper, Coca-Cola Bottling of Manchester, New Hampshire, Shaw’s of Salem, NH, and our friends at McDonald’s, whose yearly support and generosity helps make this event possible!

NURSE’S NOTES

Parents and guardians, as the weather finally turns sunny and warm, I'd like to remind you to please put sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher and maybe some bug spray to repel ticks on your children before school. There have been ticks found on school grounds already this year.  Also, please dress children appropriately, sometimes it's colder in the morning and then warms up. Make sure they bring water to drink, as they need to drink more as the weather gets warmer.  Thank you.
