Haigh School Welcome
Haigh School is a vibrant, learning community that sets high
academic expectations for children, promotes respect of all, and welcomes
parents and community members into the school to help celebrate the children’s
efforts. We have dedicated staff and teachers who pride themselves in providing
quality instruction and support for all children, so that every child continues
to learn and grow. Students work daily to acquire concepts and skills to meet
rigorous curriculum standards. The Salem
School District has implemented the Everyday Math program, Six Trait Writing
program, and McGraw-Hill Reading.
Teachers continue to participate in professional development training
that enhances their mathematics instruction.
In addition, there is a district focus on literacy. Each year, we have close to 100% student
participation in our Literacy Committee’s sponsored Reading Incentive
Program. This year a district Content
Literacy initiative will begin training content area teachers in reading strategies
that will help students read for meaning. In the classroom, students continue
developing their reading and their writing skills and applying them to the
content areas.
Haigh School has implemented Student of the Month themes that are
reinforced in guidance lessons. The themes are School Rules and Safety, Healthy
Choices, Citizenship, Sharing/Caring, Diversity/Tolerance, Honesty/Courage,
Respect, Effort, and Creativity. Haigh School is proud to honor students who
demonstrate outstanding behavior and are role models in their classrooms,
hallways, and specials. Students who
demonstrate meeting the criteria of the monthly themes are recognized at our
monthly awards assembly. Students are
also recognized for Random Acts of Kindness, D.E.A.R. (reading), and Catch them
at their Best awards. Community service
and character development in the forms of grade level food drives, Pennies for
Patients, a Holiday Giving tree, and a school recycling program all give children
opportunities to give to and help others.
We always look forward to celebrating the children’s achievements and
good choices.
We continue to be grateful to our outstanding PTA and Volunteer
program. The volunteers provide many
activities and services for our school.
Between 60-80 children regularly attend our parent-run monthly After
School activities, crafts, and learning opportunities. Our PTA raised funds at our annual Spring
Fling dinner dance to go toward the purchase of additional school playground
equipment. The PTA’s efforts also support
the children and the teachers in the classroom. In addition, the PTA sponsors enrichment assemblies and programs
at the school. Because of the dedicated and countless hours of volunteerism,
Haigh School was once again awarded the Blue Ribbon Award from the N.H.
Partners in Education. We also thank the many businesses and community
organizations that support the PTA and our school.
