We Have Converted To A New Library System!

Since November 27 we are using Destiny, a web-based library system. Before Thanksgiving we converted all library data to Destiny and the library staff (SHS and Woodbury) attended 2 days of training for the new library system. Destiny has many new features for the library administration and for the library users.

Destiny Features:

1.      You can search the online library catalog:

  • on any computer with Internet access
  • of other Salem schools (currently only Woodbury)

2.      You can find pre-selected web sites using WebPath Express.

This replaces WebFeet.

3.      You can find books, web sites, e-book information, magazine & newspaper                                                                                                                                                                                                              articles, and other database information using One Search.

3.      You will be able to put library materials on hold and see what you have checked out (Only with password).

Training For Library Users:

·        Teachers will get a brief overview and demonstration of Destiny at the January faculty meeting.

·        I will offer a workshop with hands-on training if there is enough interest.

So let me know if you would like to learn more about Destiny or need technology credits for recertification.

·        In addition I am preparing a PowerPoint tutorial for the library website. I will notify you when it is posted.

·        I would also like to introduce students to the new library catalog and its features. To that end I would appreciate if you could give me 10-15 minutes when you schedule library time for your next research assignment. I can also do this presentation in your classroom.

New Library Catalog Access:

Option 1:

·        open the library home page at: http://www.salemschooldistrictnh.com/schools/shs/library/

·        click on the shopping cart filled with books

·        select Salem High School

Option 2:

·        Go to http://shs.ssdmedia.net

·        Select Salem High school

Biography Resource Center:

This is a new online database provided by The New Hampshire State Library.

It contains biographies from a variety of Gale print reference sources, magazine articles, and web sites.

A nice feature is the biographical facts search which allows you to search for people by birth and death year, nationality, ethnicity, occupation or gender.

You access this database through the Thomson Gale icon on the SHS Online Databases page.

E-Books: Another Online Resource!

We have a new online resource: The Gale Virtual Reference Library. This database contains reference books in e-book format. They are electronic versions of Gale print reference which we currently use in the library.

Our e-book titles:

  • Gale Encyclopedia of Biomes
  • UXL American Decades
  • Gale Encyclopedia of Genetic Disorders

These e-books will give students unlimited, simultaneous, 24/7 access to high quality, up-to-date reference information.

If students and teachers like this resource I will add more e-book titles in the future.

As with all our subscription databases, this product requires a password when it is used outside of the library. Ask the library staff or teachers for usernames and passwords.

More Computers in the Library!

The library has received a computer station with 16 wireless notebook computers and a wireless printer. This brings the number of computer work stations to 40.

The wireless notebook computers increase our computer access and give us more flexibility in using computers for group and individual work.
