NATIONAL JUNIOR HONOR SOCIETY (NJHS)

CHAPTER BYLAWS

 

 

 

 

ARTICLE 1:  NAME OF THE ORGANIZATION

 

                        The name of the organization shall be the Woodbury School Chapter of

 The National Junior Honor Society of Secondary Schools.

 

ARTICLE 2:  PURPOSE OF THE ORGANIZATION

 

The purpose of this organization shall be to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to develop character, and to encourage citizenship.

 

ARTICLE 3:  POWERS VESTED IN THE ORGANIZATION

 

All powers of the NJHS are delegated to it by the School Administration.  The principal has the right to veto any act of the NJHS or revoke any powers held by it.

 

ARTICLE 4:  MEMBERSHIP

 

Membership is an honor bestowed upon a student.  Selection for membership is by Faculty Council and is based on outstanding scholarship, citizenship, character, leadership, and service.  Once selected, members have the responsibility to continue to demonstrate these qualities.  Candidates become members when inducted at a special ceremony.  Members shall be required to perform at least 21 hours of community service.

 

ARTICLE 5:  SELECTION

 

1.      Students’ academic records will be reviewed to determine scholastic eligibility (3.8 GPA including 4 quarters of 6th grade and first 2 quarters of 7th grade).

2.      Students who are eligible scholastically shall be notified, and informed that for further consideration for selection to the NJHS chapter, they may complete the Student Activity Information Form.

3.      The Student Activity Information Form will be reviewed by the Faculty Council.

4.      Candidates receiving a majority vote of the Faculty Council shall be inducted into the chapter.

5.      Students who are selected, and their parents, shall be notified of their obligations of membership in the NJHS.  All non-selected students shall be notified in a respectful manner.

 

ARTICLE 6:  MEETINGS

 

Regular meetings will be held at least once a month during the school year.  Special meetings may be called by the president.  Meetings shall be conducted according to Roberts’ Rules of Order.

 

ARTICLE 7:  DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

The chapter shall include the offices of President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Service Projects Officer.  The President will preside over all meetings.  The Vice-President will assume the role of the President if necessary and will co-chair all committees.  The Secretary will take notes at all meetings and perform all official correspondence.  The Treasurer will record and report on all funds.  The Service Projects Officer will record all service hours.  Officers shall be elected by a majority vote of all members.  Chapter advisors shall be responsible for the direct, day-to-day supervision of the chapter.  The advisors shall regularly review each member for compliance with Society standards and obligations.  The Faculty Council shall consist of at least five voting faculty members appointed annually.  The advisors shall be ex-officio, non-voting members of the Faculty Council.

 

ARTICLE 8:  BYLAWS

 

                        The bylaws are consistent with the Constitution of the NJHS.

 

ARTICLE 9:  AMENDENTS

 

                        The bylaws may be amended as determined by the Faculty Council.
